Latvia. and Lithuania lost their freedom when they were. in accordance with a NaziSoviet pact. allocated to the U.S.S.R. Toward the end of World War II. when Soviet troops reoccupied the Baltic States. the U.S.S.R. illegally incorporated these three small countries into its huge empire. The end of World War II found the Communists in undisputed and complete control. Tens of thousands of the Baltic peoples were killed and over a million were deported to slave labor camps in Siberia and other areas of the Soviet Union. Hundreds of thousands of Estonians. Latvians. and Lithuanians. were transported from their homelands. to be replaced by peoples from other parts of the Soviet empire.
