Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970037036

Mr. Speaker. I would like to bring to the attention of my colleagues the plight of Alexander Yakovlevich Lerner. a refusenik in the Soviet Union. A refusenik is a Soviet Jew who has been denied an exit visa and is many times the subject of harassment and may suffer the loss of his/her job or imprisonment. Recognition of the refuseniks independent commitment to freedom should be part of our countrys support of human rights. Alexander Lerner was once among the most respected and honored scientists in the Soviet Union. Alexander Lerner is now reduced to arranging furtive meetings with other Jewish refuseniks. in his small apartment. where they exchange scientific views and dream of their future work in Israel.
