Speech #970031603

Speaker. the life of Jewish and human rights activists in the Soviet Union is one of suffering and degradation. As concerned Americans we are continually shocked at the attitude of the Soviet Government. Officials there have consistently ignored the human rights of certain individuals in their country by denying citizens the right to emigrate to Israel and to other free nations. Iosif Mendelevich was refused permission to emigrate to another country. Because of the intolerance on the part of the Soviet officials. losif. along with several of his colleagues. chartered a plane to fly to Israel on June 15. 1970. Upon arriving at the airport. all were arrested for allegedly hijacking an airplane and. simultaneously.
