Throughout his 10 years as a Prisoner of Conscience in the Soviet gulag. Mendelevich stood up to the Soviet authorities by not relinquishing his religious convictions or sacrificing his moral character. despite being subject to extremely harsh treatment by prison officials. His courage and heroism represents an inspiration to all of those confined in Soviet labor camps or refused permission to emigrate on the basis of their religious beliefs.
