Speaker. it is a privilege to ask my colleagues to join with me in recognizing the 1.300th anniversary of the Bulgarian people and commemorating the 40th anniversary of the saving of Bulgarias 55.000 Jews from the Nazi holocaust of World War II. On September 9. 1944. Bulgaria was liberated from the Nazi yoke. and the Bulgarian people. under the leadership of one of its most dedicated antifascist fighters. Georgi Dimitrov. declared the New Democratic Republic of Bulgaria. Georgi Dimitrov thus became the first Prime Minister of liberated Bulgaria. Because of the positive attitude of the Bulgarian Government toward its Jewry. approximately 55.000 Bulgarian Jews immigrated to the newly formed state of Israel with the blessings of their Government. They. thus. realized Judaisms ancient dream of returning to the land of their fathers. It is also a pleasure to recognize Dr.
