I shall be speaking of. and reading from. the words of William Maclay. Who was this first diarist of the United States Senate? William Maclay was born on July 27. 1734nearly two hundred and fifty years agoin New Garden. Pennsylvania. the son of a ScotchIrish immigrant. He spent his early years in the south central Pennsylvania county of Franklin. and received a classical education from the Reverend John Blair. We may assume he was an adventurous youth. for at the age of twentyfour he was a lieutenant in a military expedition to Fort Duquesne (at the site of presentday Pittsburgh). and five years later participated in the French and Indian Wars.
