I appreciate having the opportunity to acclaim the sovereignty of a people whose determination and accomplishments are unmatched in modern times. The birth of Israel was not an easy one. Over a century ago. a group of young courageous Jews left the lives they had known to return to the faraway land of their forefathers. Waves of Jewish immigration followed. These individuals came from all corners of the world. They were driven by common desires: To escape from an existence marked by discrimination and hate. to build a home where they would be able to live with their heritage and religion. to live in peace.
