Mr. Speaker. on May 9 we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of American Jewish Congress. a noteworthy event in the history of a noteworthy organization. When the American Jewish Congress was founded in 1906. a wave of Jewish immigration was reaching our shores. These were people fleeing the vicious and terrible persecution then going on in Tzarist Russia and Romania. These immigrants were poor peoplepeasantsfresh from the villages of the Jewish Pale of Settlement. Some came from the ghettos of the cities where they were confined. All were seeking a new life. new opportunities. and freedom for themselves and their children.
