Ida Nudel lost her job as an economist almost immediately thereafter. She was then labeled as "an enemy of the Soviet State." a "malicious hooligan." and a common criminal. The constant harassment. KGB interrogations. and a smear campaign in the press. did not dissuade Ida Nudel from her determination to obtain emigration rights for her fellow Jews. Acting on behalf of those seeking exit visas. she became known as the "guardian angel." providing material and emotional support to Jews imprisoned in Soviet labor camps. In 1973. shortly after appealing directly to Chairman Brezhnev for an exit visa. Ms. Nudel was arrested. tortured. and sexually assaulted by her captors.
