Mr. President. I am happy today to join Senator KASSEBAuM and the other Senators sponsoring the resolution asking President Reagan to designate April 9 as "African Refugee Relief Day." The problem of hunger in Africa is growing. People of Africa are suffering the ravages of continuing wars and damaging weather. leaving 27 African countries confronted by desperate people seeking shelter and food. Our great Nation owes its support to the African people in the face of this suffering. This resolution expressed the support of the Senate in two ways: It encourages those convening in Geneva under the auspices of Organization for African Unity and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on April 9 and 10 to develop a much needed plan of action to cope with the immense refugee crisis in Africa. It also encourages American citizens to make a real contribution by foregoing a meal and contributing the cost of the meal to African refugee relief with the cost of the meal. Senator KASSEBAuMs resolution is a reflection of what has made this country great. We are a nation that cares about people.
