The US has provided nearly $28 million in assistance for food. transportation. medicines and shelter. The UN High Commission for Refugees is coordinating the effort. The response has been encouraging. but not sufficient to meet the needs. The government of Somalia. with the assistance of a UN commission. has identified shortterm and longterm needs. which will require $277 million. UNICEF estimates $175.000 per camp will be needed to provide adequate water supplies to the refugees.e
