Mr. Speaker. reserving the right to object. the House is being asked to consider Senate Joint Resolution 61. asking the President to designate April 9 as African Refugee Relief Day. As the sponsor of this resolution. it has been my privilege to have the sponsorship of more than 230 Members of the House. This Thursday and Friday. the United Nations is sponsoring a conference on assistance to refugees in Africa in cooperation with the Organization for African Unity. It is my hope that increased public awareness of the grave refugee problems in Africa will result in greater support for those agencies. as well as stronger humanitarian assistance from our Government. For the record. I would like to include in the REcoRD a listing of those agencies recognized by the State Department and United Nations for their work in providing care and relief to refugees in Africa. How CAN You Hax AFRICAN REFUGEEs There are private relief agencies throughout the country that are working to provide food. medicine. and other assistance to refugees in Africa. All of these groups are recognized by the State Department or the United Nations for their work in this field. In every instance. contributions to these groups should specify: "for African refugees."
