Mr. President. in 1944 a Swedish citizen named Raoul Wallenberg went to Hungary to do what he could to rescue Jews and others marked for extermination as part of Hitlers "final solution." He risked his life so that others might live. because of his efforts. at least 20.000 people were saved from being deported to the death camps. and tens of thousands of others were saved from violent deaths in the ghetto of Budapest. In January 1945. however. Raoul Wallenberg was taken into custody by Soviet forces. The Free Wallenberg Committee. of which I am a cochairman. has been working to secure Raoul Wallenbergs release from a Russian prison.
