Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970013297

Jewish Heritage Week will be a reminder to all Americans of the valiant stand which the Jews have always made in the face of oppressive religious discrimination and persecution. During this special observance. it will be appropriate for us to join together In renewing our efforts to insure religious freedom for the Jews and for all peoples who are being harassed and persecuted in practicing their religion. My own city of Chicago is a city of immigrants. and our entire Nation is a beautiful and creative mosaic of grand contributions made by each immigrant group. The designation of "Jewish Heritage Week" is a tribute to the role of Jewish immigrants in making our country strong and free. and Americans of Jewish heritage continue to carry forward the newworld tradition of determination. hard work. and courage. I urge the support of my colleagues for this resolution.*
