Almost 6 years ago we signed the Helsinki agreement with the Soviet Union to protect fundamental rights for all people. Four years ago. Anatoly Shcharansky was imprisoned under the false charge of treason. Shcharansky remains imprisoned and reportedly must endure harsher treatment since being placed in a prison within the labor camp where he is serving a 13year term. Like so many other prisoners of conscience. the only charge Soviet officials can make against Anatoly Shcharansky is his desire to emigrate to Israel. AntiJewish sentiment throughout Russia is used against Shcharansky and other dissidents. For our friends trying to leave it has become part of the horrible ordeal.
