In 1975. Shcharansky lost his job as a computer programer at the Moscow Research Institute for oil and gas. On March 15. 1977. he was imprisoned by Soviet authorities. This action followed an article in a party paper which described him as a traitor and an agent for the CIA. Later in 1977. his wife Avital. was forced to emigrate from the Soviet Union to Israel one day after the couples July 4 wedding. In July 1978. following a kangaroo court trial. Mr. Shcharansky was convicted of being a traitor and fomenting antiSoviet agitation. He was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment.
