Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970007413

Lithuania and Estonia. bravely proclaimed their independence. It is a sad irony that this week and next. as we joyously hail their parallel quests for freedom. we must also lament the fact that they are still not free. In 1940. the three Baltic StatesLithuania. Estonia. and Latviawere forcibly incorporated into the U.S.S.R.. their people harassed. deported. arrested. imprisoned. exiled. and executed. in complete violation of international lawand human rights. And so again. during what ought to be a completely joyous celebration of freedom. we must register our vehement opposition to the Soviet Union for its total disregard for fundamental human liberties. The Lithuanians.
