Logunov. as a highly placed Soviet bureaucrata member of the Communist Partys Central Committee. a deputy to the Supreme Soviet. a vice president of the Soviet Academy of Sciencesknew perfectly well that he was dutybound to send the commissions report. which he himself had signed. to the visa office or the Committee for State Security (KGB). He knew very well that our fate and the fate of our children depended on It. Yet he did not forward this report. nor has he to this day. It became clear that all the claims of safeguarding state secrets were an empty pretext. They just did not want to let us go. In our country. a man who has declared his wish to emigrate loses the right to continue with his normal professional pursuits. This applies with particular force to an intellectual. If he is a writer. his work is no longer published.
