Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970004861

The notion that there is something to be gained by protestation is one to be swiftly and terribly denied in the Soviet Union. and Dr. Brailovskys abusive treatment is meant to demonstrate the refusal of the Soviet Government to validate any of these efforts. Against such odds. who will or can do anything to break the cycle constituted by the denial of exit visas for Soviet Jews and their resulting activism and arrest for what was once a quiet and lawful effort? Will not the Soviets finally discourage all emigration attempts and carry out their systematic program of discrimination against Jews and other minority and religious groups in the Soviet Union? The answer is an emphatic "no." The people of the Soviet Union have shown enormous strength and determination in fighting this repression and with our help and support. they can prevail. We need to utilize all the tools we have available to fight the abuse of human rights in the Soviet Union and to free the innocent victims of Soviet retribution.
