Lemkin was the man who coined the term "genocide." meaning. of course. a program of deliberate murder and destruction of an entire ethnic or racial groupthe classic example being Hitlers genocidal destruction of Jews in World War II and preWorld War II Europe. Dr. Lemkin was a Jewish refugee from Nazi persecution. Dr. Lemkin emigrated to the United States. where he became a special adviser on foreign affairs to the War Department and a respected scholar. This man dedicated his life to establishing genocide as an international crime that must be banished from civilized society. He was a major factor in winning the support of the Western powers at the Genocide Convention and having it ratifled by the United Nations General Assembly.
