After 2 weeks. the Vashchenkos received word that John had returned home to Chernogorsk. Still. they felt they could not safely return to their families in Siberia and remained in the Embassy. For 21/2 years these courageous families have resisted all pressures to leave the Embassy and have sought assurances that they would be permitted to emigrate and that the remaining members of their families would suffer no further injustices and would soon be able to Join them outside the Soviet Union. Their living conditions have been moved from the waiting room to a basement room in the Embassy. The room is anproximately 12 by 15 feet.
