Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960344565

Speaker. it is a pleasure to rise today in support of legislation similar to that which I introduced in July of this year . to create a wilderness zone within the Fire Island National Seashore. The purpose of the establishment of a National Wilderness Preservation System was to assure that present and future generations of Americans would have available to them Americas greatest natural resourcethe lands and waters that comprise our great Nation. Congress recognized the need to preserve the raw beauty that has so captivated explorers and immigrants over the past five centuries. The Fire Island National Seashore was established in 1964 in order to preserve a relatively unspoiled area in very close proximity to one of the most densely populated areas on this continent. That enabling legislation envisioned a wilderness area by prohibiting development in the socalled 8mile zone between Davis Park and Smith Point County Park.
