I am certain that my colleagues wish to join me in honoring this extraordinary American on this happy occasion. Aaron Copland. our countrys greatest living composer. epitomizes the classic American success story: A man from modest beginnings who has reached the top of his profession through talent. determination. and singlemindedness. Copland was born in 1900. in Brooklyn. N.Y.. to immigrant parents. He studied piano and harmony privately. went to Boys High School and dreamed of going to Paris where the most exciting developments in the arts were taking place. When he saw an announcement of a school for Americans to begin in the summer of 1921 at Fountainbleau near Paris.
