Speaker. on December 13. 1980. a major milestone in U.S. journalism history will occur as I1 Progresso. the leading Italian language newspaper. observes its 100th birthday. I am honored to bring this information to the attention of my House colleagues. and wish to pay tribute to I1 Progresso for this marvelous achievement. In 1880. Il Progresso was founded by Carlo Barsotti to serve the needs of the burgeoning Italian immigrant population in the United States. The first issue was published on December 13 of that year. I1 Progresso continued to operate under its original owners until 1928. when the paper was sold.
