Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960325705

Mr. Speaker. the situation of the refugees in Somalia demands the attention and action of this Nation. Over 1 million people are faced with disease and malnourishment in refugee camps hastily erected to cope with the influx of people fleeing the war in the Ogaden. Because Somalia is one of the poorest nations in the world. it does not have the ability to feed. clothe. house. or provide proper medical care for these people. and the United Nations has asked the world community to provide assistance. I believe that the United States should be in the forefront of this assistance effort. and I have communicated that idea to the White House and the State Department.
