Speaker. distinguished colleagues. during this past weekend. the largest organization of Polish Americans and the largest fraternal organization in the United States. the Polish National Alliance. celebrated its 100th anniversary. Although the alliance is now based in Chicago. the centennial birthday celebrations took place in Philadelphia where the Polish National Alliance was founded on February 15. 1880. At the time of its founding. the principal aims of the alliance and its member organizations were threefold: First. to help more recent immigrants from Poland to establish themselves in this country. second. to maintain the unique culture and traditions brought over from Poland. and. third. to work for the reemergence of a free. independent Polish state. It must be remembered that. at the time. Poland did not appear on maps of Europe because Prussia.
