Mr. Speaker. I rise in support of H.R. 6593. the Swine Health Protection Act. With outbreaks of African swine fever in Cuba. it may only be a matter of time before this dread disease reaches our shoresa strong possibility especially when we consider the recent Influx of Cuban refugees into our country. This disease. spread primarily through infected pork scraps in raw or improperly cooked garbage fed to swine. has no known treatment. The only cure is the eradication of those swine exposed to the diseaseat great economic loss to swine producers and the pork industry as a whole. And. of course. in the end these losses would be passed on to the consumer when ultimate pork shortages would result in drastic price increases.
