Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960314540

Also. on visits by Members of Congress to the State of Alaska. local businessmen and government officials expressed an active interest in encouraging Japanese investment in fishery facilities as a method of increasing employment and otherwise boosting the States economy. Of course. we still have problems with Japan that remain to be resolved in spite of the growth of U.S. exports. Japan still maintains comparatively high rates of duty and certain quota restrictions on imports of fish products. Difficulties also exist between the United States and Canada because the United States claims the right to fish for migratory species within Canadas 200mile limit. This bill removes important leverage the United States has in seeking solutions to these bilateral trade problems for the benefit of all U.S. exports.
