Although Hispanic Heritage Week has been celebrated every year for over 12 years. very few people realize just how much those of Hispanic heritage have contributed to this country. Many people are now aware that the Hispanic community will soon be this Nations largest ethnic minority group. and it is widely recognized that Hispanic art. music. food. and language have greatly enhanced the richness of American life. However. very few people are aware of the important role played by Hispanics in the development of the United States. Mexican and Spanish immigrants began settling this country long before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. establishing such cities as St. Augustine. El Paso. and Santa Fe.
