What the gentleman has just stated was a continuing pattern here. especially in the earlier days of Fort Chaffee. The Acting Commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service promised to check into this and be back in touch. Nothing further has been heard from him. The next contact was with an Associate Deputy Attorney General who. at least. was aware of the problem and willing to discuss it. However. it was his opinion that the post commander had all the authority he needed to control the Cubans and the Posse Comitatus issue was really not very important. In this conversation every attempt was made to make this senior official of the Department of Justice realize how seriously the local people were viewing the lack of control on the fort and the steps they were taking to protect their families from harm by those Cubans who were beginning to roam the countryside.
