Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960299223

One thing that Andrews did for Mr. Atkinson. however. was very unusual. He visited the Soviet Union to meet with the members of the Vashchenko and Chmykhalov families who have sought sanctuary in the American Embassy in Moscow. Two years ago these families came from Siberia to Moscow to seek help from our Embassy in order to emigrate from the Soviet Union on the grounds of religious conscience. They live in cramped quarters in the Embassy. afraid to leave the shelter that we have provided for them. Andrew was asked to meet with the family and to bring back a progress report to Mr.
