Speech #960287755

Through an extended network of committees. the society serves Americans of all ages and in numerous capacities. providing such invaluable programs as financial aid and scholarships to outstanding students and contests and awards to stimulate interest in good citizenship and American history. I fondly recall the pride and encouragement I felt upon receiving a DAR American History Medal when I was a high school student in Mrs. Shelbys neighboring Bolivar County town of Cleveland. Miss. DAR members help support American Indian schools. assist immigrants in becoming naturalized citizens. and serve as volunteers in 172 Veterans Administration hospitals. As House Members. we owe a special debt of gratitude to the DAR in that they have made the largest single contribution to the Capitol restoration and improvement work being carried out by the U.S. Capitol Historical Society.
