Since the third week in July was first established as Captive Nations Week in 1959. by Public Law 8690. the battle for freedom against the tyranny of communism has had its ups and downs. I believe that this observation is even more pertinent today than it was in July 1959. With the opening of the summer Olympic games in Moscow. we are reminded of the recent Soviet actions in Afghanistan. which has now been designated the newest captive nation. We must not lose sight of this invasion of a small. defenseless Muslim nation and of the suffering of the 1 million Afghan refugees now in camps in Pakistan and Iran. This is just one instance of the ruthless policies of the Kremlin leaders. At this point in my remarks.
