The failure of the League of Nations to protect the sovereignty of the countries of Eastern Europe in the twenties and thirties was a boon to Soviet and Nazi expansion. The failure of the United Nations to defend its members in recent years has allowed the Soviets to continue their pattern of occupation and subjugation. Mr. Speaker. freedom Is a great incentive. People fight for it and people work for it. Refugees from the captive nations have contributed to the growth of this country because this countrys strength represents the best hope for the spread and defense of freedom around the world. Defending the cause of freedom is in the American interest. There is far more at stake here than humanitarian ideals. although these too are clearly in jeopardy.
