Lithuania was a free and independent state. which made great strides in modernization and raising the standard of living. In these 22 years. the people of Lithuania were able to live their lives as they saw fit. under their laws. their customs and in their culture. In 1940. Soviet occupation destroyed much of this progress and heritage and resulted in the deportation of 300.000 freedomloving Lithuanians to Siberian labor camps. The United States does not recognize the unlawful occupation of Lithuania or any other of the Baltic States by the Soviet Union. This action is in clear violation of the Atlantic Charter and present international law.
