Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960267535

Since coming to Congress in 1969. I have worked actively on behalf of Soviet Jews. My efforts have included visiting the Soviet Union and meeting with the Director of the Office of Visas and Registration as well as the head of the Soviet police. I was influential in obtaining the freedom of several individuals who had been imprisoned for their political activities. I will continue to work on behalf of Soviet Jews and others who wish to emigrate or who have been unfairly imprisoned or exiled. Recently. I sent the following letter to Secretary Brezhnev asking for the release of Iosif Mendelevich.
