By 1915. as the crumbling Ottoman Empire was battling against the allies. these hopes were lost forever. The government in Constantinople again instituted a deliberate. systematic policy to destroy all vestiges of the Armenian community in Turkey. Brutal townbytown raids in which men were murdered. women were forced to convert to Islam and children and the elderly were deported. resulted in the death or exile of 1.500.00080 percent of the Armenian population in Turkey. The attempt to unify and Turkify the state was successful. for there are virtually no Armenians remaining in their historic areas of Turkey. There are however approximately 500.000 Armenians in the United States today. and the large Armenian community in New Jersey adds to the ethnic richness and cultural diversity of the State I proudly represent.
