President. I support the resolution on Afghanistan that has been proposed by the distinguished majority and minority leaders. As honorary cochairman of the Afghanistan Relief Committee. a private organization raising funds for Afghan refugees in other countries. I believe this resolution would help to continue to focus public attention on the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the plight of the Afghan refugees. The final "whereas" clause of this resolution correctly points out that nearly 1 million Afghans have been driven from their homes to seek refuge in other countries. I believe that this statement. which stresses the human as against the strategic consequences of the Soviet invasion. should be complemented by a statement in the "resolved" portion of the resolution supporting the Presidents action on June 19 in proclaiming the week of July 2127 as "Afghanistan Relief Week." That is the opening week of the Moscow Olympics. so the selection of that week to highlight the plight of the Afghan refugees is most appropriate.
