Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960258422

Mr. Speaker. today we consider the appropriation bill for the Justice and State Departments there will be at least one. if not several amendments dealing with the question of border patrol. Those of us on the Immigration Subcommittee who have dealt with the question for some period of time recognize that our overall immigration policy is something that takes a multifaceted solution. But I think all of us agree that part of that solution is having law enforcement with respect to our borders.. particularly the Southwest border. This is something that has been absolutely ignored by this administration. In the authorization bill we did increase the number of border patrol officers for the specific purpose of having increased enforcement along the Southwest border. Amendments will be offered so we will fund that previously authorized level of personnel. I would ask my colleagues to look at this seriously and at least help us to supply one part of the solution to a very. very difficult and vexing problem.
