Now. later in the week I hope the gentleman will be sympathetic to a problem that does exist along the Mexican border. Let me point out a couple of salient facts that will make the numbers. not the extent of the gentlemans problem. but the numbers pale into insignificance relatively. and yet it is a very serious problem. On the Mexican border last year alone. 879.566 illegal aliens were apprehendedcaughtin 1 year. That is almost a million. Now. the border patrol estimates that two or three escape for every one that is apprehended. That means that somewhere around 2 million a year are entering this country. This administration has no border patrols. no coherent policy whatsoever. and we are not enforcing the law. Furthermore. many border patrol agents were taken off of the sector in the West. all the way from Texas to California. to go to Florida. and left our border a wide open sieve. So I merely say that later in the week we are going to offer an amendment not to add. but to restore 160 border patrol agents. It will not stem the tide. but it will show the border patrol that somebody cares about them until this administration can get its act together and figure out what it is going to do about the illegal alien problem.
