Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960247207

During the debate or the Refugee Act of 1980. the supporters o this bill informed the Congress that one ol its purposes was to eliminate such dodges ae utilization of the Attorney Generals parole power. so that all people who were refugees were put into this country as refugees pursuant to the limitations in this act. Today. you have informed us that the people who are getting off the boats from Cuba are being treated as possible political asylees and given 60 days to file an application for political asylum. What I would like to know is what happens to these people if it is subsequently found that they do not meet the criteria for political asylum and their petition for asylum is thus denied?
