Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960245396

Since that time. in total and complete contravention of its obligations under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. the Government of Syria has not permitted a single additional Syrian Jew to leave the country. not simply to go to Israel. but even to come to the United States or any other country in the world that would have them. As the gentleman has pointed out. and as others have noted. their attitude toward the peace process has been equally counterproductive. I had hoped to return to Syria last January in an effort to renew my pleas on behalf of the beleaguered Jewish community. but this time the Syrian Government would not even issue me a visa to let me go into the country. I am not at all persuaded that we ought to be providing foreign aid to another nation which refuses to permit Members of the U.S. House of Representatives into that country for the purpose of civilized discussions about some of our mutual problems.
