Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960244212

Political persecution is certainly a major hallmark of our era. largely because liberal diplomats and State Department types have fiddled while Communists have overrun major portions of the world. We are confronted with a dilemma. If we allow our friends to fallin some cases through betraying themdo we then have an obligation to assimilate into our society the political immigrants who leave for fear of their lives? This has not been a recent happening and it certainly is not partisanit has been going on for many years but not at the pace that we have seen in 1979 and 1980 with the Vietnamese boat people. the Cambodians. the Cubans. and the Nicaraguans. In the 1950s America led our friends in the Eastern European satellite countries to believe that if they would only revolt against their Communist masters. we would help.
