The Legal Services Corporation was established in 1974 for the stated purpose of providing free legal services to the poor. Yet. in many instances. poor people are used as pawns by legal services attorneys determined to reform society. Hence. we see federally funded lawyers heavily engaged in lobbying. suing for publicly financed abortions. representing illegal aliens in suits against private businesses. and so on. Unfortunately. the structure of the Legal Services Corporation is fundamentally flawed in that local legal services grantees are not accountable to any elected officials. If a local program engages in prohibited activities. local and State officials are powerless to act.
