Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960241524

Elenas story is all too familiar. one whose final chapter has yet to be written. Approximately 6 months ago the congregation of the Oak Park Templelocated in my congressional districtadopted a refusenik. Elena Oleynik. Their attempts to help in her desperate fight for freedom have so far been unsuccessful. The Soviets campaign of harassment against Elena and her family began when she and her husband were denied a visa to emigrate to Israel in March 1978. In June. Elena and her two brothers were threatened by the KGB with the same fate as Anatoly Sharansky. that is. constant harassment. false criminal charges. and heavy prison sentences under the harshest of conditions.
