Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960238937

Speaker. no one has more sympathy for those fleeing Communist tyranny than do conservatives. But. as William Buckley put it in his May 18 column: We must begin by recognizing that the resources of the United States are not infinite. though our capacity for compassion is. and should be. infinite. Liberal foreign policy has given communism so much of the world that we cannot give asylum even to the legitimate political refugees. As Buckley puts it: What if we limit ourselves to those countries in which persecution exists as a result of failed U.S. diplomacy? That would entitle everyone in Southeast Asia to come in.
