Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960232721

Mr. President. as World War II progressed. American newspapers carried daily reports about the death camps. mass deportations. and slaughter of European Jews. But rather than face the unpleasant and horrifying truth about these Nazi atrocities. Americalike the rest of the free worldchose to deny what was really happening. How could we read and know of such terror and still ignore what was happening to millions of human beings? And yet. how could we be expected to believe what the Jews themselves found difficult to comprehend? The reason is simple. It is easier to deny or distort something which is upsetting rather than face the harsh realities.
