In refusing to bend before constant official harassment and intimidation. Ida Nudel has become a symbol of courage in the midst of the Soviet Unions callous disregard for basic human rights. I urge the Soviet Union to honor its commitment to the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. which it signed in Helsinki in 1975. and permit to Ida Nudel the guaranteed right to emigrate in search of political and religious liberty. Let us hope and pray that long before her 50th birthday. Ida Nudel will be granted the wish which she has so long desired and so fervently pursuedto live in a land of religious and political freedom.*
