Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960232345

Ours is the most wealthy and most free Nation in the world. It is. of course. the most desirable country in which to live. But we simply cannot open our doors to everyone who wants to immigrate to this country. Previous refugees from Cuba have become some of our finest citizens and have made important contributions to our society. However. the current influx of refugees. which could number into the tens of thousands. should not be the responsibility of the United States alone. We should seek the cooperation of our Latin American neighbors in shouldering some of this burden. And we should permit the citizens of other nations who wish to immigrate to our country to do so only in accordance with our laws.$
