Mdny of its victims are the poor and disadvantaged. Since 1940. the incidence of tuberculosis has declined considerably. due largely to the development of new drugs and the implementation of successful public health measures. Experts fear. however. that a greater incidence of TB may again be on the rise due to a large influx of immigrants from parts of the world where TB is endemicMexico. the Caribbean. and Southeast Asiaand because of a breakdown in city public health programs that is the result of newly imposed tight budgetary controls. Considerable effort and an increase in funds will be necessary in the coming years to further reduce or even to maintain the incidence of tuberculosis at its current rates. As it continues to raise money in the effort to eradicate tuberculosis.
